Three water companies are seeking restrictions on non-essential business use as drought continues across much of England. Proposed measures could affect mains-water irrigation at golf courses and private schools, as well as commercial car washes.

The report describes low river flows, declining groundwater and reservoir levels below the usual autumn position. Yorkshire entered drought status in October, while parts of Wales had begun showing early recovery after a summer drought declaration.

The proposed bans represent applications for stronger controls, not a statement that every affected business is already prohibited from operating. Sustained rainfall is needed to improve supply, and the measures are intended to reduce discretionary demand while water resources and the wildlife depending on them remain under pressure.
