Formula One has announced a ten-year agreement for a race in Rwanda, with the first meeting planned for the early 2030s. The proposed African Grand Prix would bring the championship back to the continent for the first time since 1993.
The race is to use a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, around forty kilometres south of Kigali. WurzDesign, led by former driver Alexander Wurz, is responsible for the track design.
Lewis Hamilton has repeatedly supported an African event, highlighting the continent’s absence from the calendar. The agreement establishes a longer-term plan rather than an immediate fixture: the circuit and preparations still sit ahead of the intended opening period, while the last African Formula One race remains Kyalami in South Africa.
