Sylvester Stallone’s The Steps recounts how Rocky emerged from a period of struggling to establish himself as an actor and writer. The memoir connects the fictional boxer’s unlikely opportunity with the author’s own account of persistence and eventual success.
The story moves through early work in New York and attempts to develop scripts in California, ending around the film’s Oscar triumph. It also adopts a self-help tone, presenting setbacks as experiences from which readers might draw encouragement.
The Guardian’s review finds Stallone an energetic storyteller while questioning some of the messaging and anecdotes. Those reservations belong to the critic: the book’s central attraction is access to how its creator chooses to narrate the making of a defining film.
