Joni Mitchell has become a United States citizen, more than six decades after first moving there from Canada. The singer-songwriter shared footage of the ceremony and a photograph beside an American flag on social media.

Born in Alberta in 1943, Mitchell developed her early career through Canadian folk venues before marrying Chuck Mitchell and relocating to the United States in 1965. The marriage ended, but her American musical career continued.

Citizenship now allows her to vote in US elections, an opportunity she had previously said she wanted. The announcement adds a personal milestone to a long artistic life that spans both countries, without changing the Canadian origins of the work and experiences that helped shape her early development.
