Tarek Atoui’s Turbine Hall installation combines water basins, large stones and suspended musical forms at Tate Modern. Oversized trumpets and glowing drums hang above an environment visitors can encounter physically as well as visually.

Sound gives the installation another dimension, with resonating notes moving through the former power station’s large space. The objects therefore operate as part of an evolving listening experience rather than only a display of unusual shapes.

The Guardian’s review responds enthusiastically to the relationship between the sculptures and their changing acoustic presence. Its description suggests a work that rewards looking upward and moving through the hall, while demonstrating how an installation can occupy a familiar museum space through more than images alone.
