A Guardian feature surveys European spa towns whose buildings and public spaces developed around mineral-water tourism. Eleven historic towns were recognised together as a transnational UNESCO world heritage site in 2021.
The list includes Bath, Spa and the western Bohemian towns of Karlovy Vary, Františkovy Lázně and Mariánské Lázně. Their hotels, gardens and bathing facilities reflect an older model of travel that reached its strongest expression between the eighteenth century and the nineteen-thirties.
The article presents possible autumn destinations rather than medical guidance. Descriptions of local treatment traditions should not be read as proof of a benefit for every visitor. The historical setting, architecture and available leisure facilities provide the central travel interest, with bookings and access dependent on the chosen venue.
