Indian Cafe Racer has moved from a small space behind the Wellington pub into a larger Birmingham restaurant. The venture by Azad Kayes now has sixty-five covers after attracting a following that outgrew its original setting.

The changing menu draws on dishes associated with different Indian cities. The Guardian’s visit included gol gappa, chicken pepper fry and a grilled aubergine-and-mushroom preparation, reflecting a broader approach than one fixed regional menu.

The review places the expansion alongside changes in Birmingham’s better-known Balti district, where restaurant numbers have declined. Its positive account concerns one business finding an audience in that landscape, rather than a claim that the wider dining sector has completed a recovery or that every visit will repeat the critic’s experience.
