Girls is set to return to HBO for a limited run, with production expected to begin in 2027. The five-episode extension brings creator Lena Dunham back as Hannah Horvath alongside Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, Jemima Kirke and Andrew Rannells.
The original series ran from 2012 to 2017, following young adults trying to establish their lives in New York. Judd Apatow is also returning as an executive producer. HBO describes the new chapter as an opportunity to revisit the characters around the milestone of turning forty.
Dunham said a return required a particular story rather than simply an appetite for reunion. Further plot details, a title and additional casting had not been announced. The project therefore establishes the central cast and limited format, while leaving the direction of the characters’ later lives open.
