Digger, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro G Iñárritu, is facing a large projected loss after a weak second weekend. Reporting cited by The Guardian put North American weekend revenue at about $3.2 million, down sixty percent from its opening.

The film’s worldwide box office stood at roughly $35.3 million in that report. Variety estimated a possible loss of around $245 million, based on production, marketing and likely ticket revenue. These are projections rather than final audited figures, and Warner Bros offered a different estimate of the break-even point.

Critical reaction has been sharply divided, while a campaign highlighting opposing reviews appeared to have limited impact. The result adds to a difficult run for the studio and illustrates the gap that can develop between a major production’s cost and the audience it attracts in cinemas.
